The 3rd Aussie Champs was fun on the sand and something truly grand!

It only gets Better!!!!!

As the 3rd Aussie Championships are now behind us, and with the great results of our Australian players, especially the girls showing their prowess as some of the top players going around. Melanie Butler showing her resiliance and will to win, to take out the Womens singles title, and pairing up with Belinda O'Connor to hold off the determined Anna Brown and Kellie De Burgh. The Mens draw saw the French triumphant, but not without a battle.

As the gap has narrowed and a thin line seperates us, between these 2 beach tennis nations. Bertrand Coulet taking the Men's tiltle from local talent and ATP player Rubin Statham, who to his credit fought hard against the experience and trickery of Bertrand. The Men's Doubles was a hard fought battle, with the 2 French combinations fighting it out. After an early round loss to the Australian Pair of Knaggs/Mapley the French Coulet x 2 regrouped to take the title in the elimination final from Sanson x2.

The Mixed again was well contested and an All Australian Final, saw Bel and Michael take the title. The Masters or over 35's saw the old warhorse Bertrand face his fellow countryman and rival Jeff Quilici, and once again lay claim to a triple treat of titles. The 2009 also saw the addition of the FUN Section, which was an envaluable demonstration of what the sport of beach tennis is all about, participation, activation, motivation and a splash of Competition, just what they loved.

Well done to all those children who competed on the Friday in the windy and trying conditions. Having our first Interstate Junior Champ Charlie Godbar in the 12 and under section was exciting and we hope this spreads the word further around the country for further development of the sport in local communities and regions. Also it was great to see the Reunion Team send their top Junior Roman Say as he put on a very polished and skilled performance to take out the Open Junior singles event.

The event was a true reflection of how all players came together and participated, not only with an amazing high standard of sportsmanship, but a true sense of representing the sport and its underlying standards. Lets make Australia a smaller place and grow the game and support the future of Friends, Family and FUN.

We wish to also thank our supporters and sponsors of the event. The contributions and services given by volunteers once again made the event a huge success.

Highlights of the 2nd Australian International Beach Tennis Championships,

Jan 11-13, 2008, Melbourne, Australia

The Open events saw some amazing matches with experience and prowess, sitting alongside new and raw talent,on the Port Melbourne sand. We were also deighted to host our internationals from France, and for the first time NSW and Qld representatives., who have begun their journey of beach tennis. The local public and passing traffic were amazed and delighted by the skill on show and the spirit and sportsmanship on display by all competitors.

The Men's final would see our French compatriot Bertrand Coulet, take home the silverware (Nudie Cup) facing off against his fellow countryman and brother in the Final. That's what you call keeping it in the family. Once again we would see the brothers triumphant in the Men's Open Doubles European Cup, clawing back from the jaws of defeat to take out the double elimination match in a nailbiter, after being down 4 love, against Dean and Michael.

The Women's Open saw local identiity and glamour girl Belinda O'Connor and Kellie de Burgh battle it out. But it was the strength, height and power of Belinda rising above Kellie to take out the Nudie Cup for 2008. The Open Women's European Cup, would see Kellie and Anna Brown, gain a firm stronghold on the trophy for 2008, showing their younger opponents Gabbi and Anna the way through consistency and experience.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved and made it possible at this years tournament and we are looking forward to 2009, already! It will be on us before we know it. Thanks also to to the players who supported the event and showed great ambassadry for the sport. So don’t be a spectator, participate and motivate and become a player of this exciting new sport. A game of tribal proportions. The ball is in your court, start praticing today and join us on the sand.

Melbourne, Australia 2007
Raw Aussie talent, sends out warnings to internationals, of new fromtiers!

Whilst Rod Laver Arena was touting record numbers at the 2007 Australian Open, Australian Beach Tennis was about to host its inaugural tournament, that would place beach tennis on the map, in this country.

Australia would be the host the 3 nations of Italy, France and Portugal, competing at the an Australasian first!

It has been a great road and one that we have worked hard on, to ensure the quality of players from overseas and nationally.

It was an event that had to take place, and one that would show our commitment to the sport and also to demonstrate top future and existing players, that beach tennis is here to stay.

There were moments of joy, moments of frustration and moments that if you could bottle it, you would. The athleticism and comradery on display, would bring many interested spectators and potential partners to the forefront and see others, touched by the passion on display!

All our efforts, have now seen this to be an ongoing event , that will promise to see further international grace our shores, in efforts to tilt our cup. However, I have no doubt that our own talent has sent out the warning signs, that we are growing quality players, and will be a force of the future.

2007 saw the inaugural Australian International Beach Tenis Championships take place on Sth Melbourne shorelines. Featuring some of the worlds elite form France, Itlay and Portugal, raw Australian talent proved it was there to make its mark, featuring a podium place in all but one event.

In coming times we hope to see many new and fresh faces, which will further establish the commitment to a game, that has unique fitness, technical and mental attributes. But most of all demonstrates great sportsmanship in a fun, heathy and highly passionate environment.

Future events will be very exciting and innovative, and will coontinue to give the sport integrity and credibility amongst the sporting world. Beach Tennis Australia is supported by the City of Port Philip. It’s all about the sport!!
